The spearhead of the Luftwaffe was the Messerschmitt Bf109E. A formidable fighting machine, it had proved itself to be world class throughout its previous campaigns. The winner of a fly-off competition with the Grumman Wildcat to provide the US Navy with a new, modern carrier-based monoplane fighter, the Buffalo incorporated a host of advanced design features, including many to support its operation from the deck of US aircraft carriers.
The fighter would also attract strong international sales support, with Britain, Finland and the Netherlands all operating the Buffalo during WWII, particularly with the Commonwealth Air Forces facing the Japanese in South East Asia.

The year 1917 would prove to be a significant one for the air war over the trenches of the Western Front, as the British introduced their capable Bristol F.2B Fighter, a true multi-role aircraft and the Germans their Fokker DR.1, an aircraft which would be made famous by the feared Manfred von Richthofen.

Representing the primary production variant of the Messerschmitt Me262 jet, the A-1A was the fighter-bomber version of the aircraft desired by Hitler, capable of being used as an interceptor, or configured to carry bombs and air-to-air mortars on nose mounted pylons.
With the aircraft's powerful nose mounted cannons used to devastating effect against the massed formations of USAAF bombers attacking Germany, the offensive firepower of the jets could be further enhanced by the addition of R4M “Orkan” (Hurricane) rocket packs under each wing.
Mounted on rudimentary racks made from wood, twelve R4M stabilised rockets could be carried under each wing, each one capable of bringing down an enemy bomber.

Without question, the de Havilland Mosquito qualifies as one of the finist fighting aeroplanes of the Second World War and one which could claim to be the envy of every other air force, particularly the Luftwaffe, who tried, but never quite managed to produce an equivalent aircraft. A licence agreement was signed to allow Westland Aircraft based at Yeovil to produce the helicopter for British service. An aircraft which has often been described as 'Australia's panic fighter', the decision to build the indigenous Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation Boomerang came in the wake of continued Japanese aggression in the Pacific and the need to ensure a continuous future supply of new fighters for the RAAF. By using many sections and components from existing aircraft types under construction in Australia, the first Boomerang was produced just sixteen weeks after the original design decision was made and 250 of these diminutive fighters would eventually be produced. Possessing excellent low altitude performance, the Boomerang would often be used to mark targets for ground attack Corsairs during the latter stages of WWII, a role which earned the distinctive little aircraft the nickname 'Smoky Joe'.

The Boulton-Paul Defiant was the only "Turret Fighter" to enter service with the RAF. The Defiant used the philosophy that a fighter aircraft, armed soley with a turret bristling with machine guns would be able to enter a bomber stream causing havoc and the turret would also enable it to defend itself from enemy fighters. During its first few engagements during the Battle of Britain in 1940, enemy pilots were taken by surprise and the Defiant fared well but soon the Lutwaffe pilots worked out its weaknesses, especially the lack of forward firing guns and the Defiant was soon relegated to night fighting duties were it fared better.

The De Havilland was the second jet fighter to enter RAF service, coming after the Gloster Meteor. Featuring a twin boom fusalage, which was to become a common feature of De Havilland designs, the Vampire proved a capable early jet fighter. The Vampire T.11 trainer was developed from the fighter versions and served the RAF until 1967. It was an excellent trainer and examples continue to fly today both in the UK and further afield.
