One of the most important aircraft of the early jet era, the North American F-86 Sabre was in many ways a jet powered version of the company’s hugely successful P-51D Mustang from WWII and an aircraft which made full use of captured German aerodynamic research material.  Featuring a distinctive 35-degree wing sweep, the Sabre also incorporated three nose mounted .50 calibre machine guns positioned on either side of the aircraft’s nose, with this jet powered gunslinger sharing many design philosophies with its famous piston powered predecessor. On entering service with the U.S Air Force in 1949, the North American F-86 Sabre would have the distinction of not only being America’s first swept wing fighter, but also the fastest fighter aircraft in the world at that time, a true aviation classic. By 1943, the RAF needed a dedicated ground attack fighter and the Typhoon was suited to the role. The powerful engine allowed the aircraft to carry a load of up to two 1,000lb (454kg) bombs. RAF Beaufort crews were tasked with flying some of the most dangerous attack missions of the Second World War, with their aircraft often flying into a hail of enemy defensive fire. The Hawker P.1127 was the first British development aircraft that led to the BAE Harrier, the first vertical and/or short take-off and landing (V/STOL) jet fighter-bomber. Development began in 1957, using the specially developed Bristol Pegasus vectored thrust engine. With the American built M4 Sherman Tank available to Allied forces in large numbers, the British decided to match their successful 17-pounder anti-tank gun with the latest version of the Sherman, in the hope that they could produce a tank capable of challenging the feared German Tiger and Panther heavy tanks. Requiring quite significant redesign of the turret and with the gun mounted on its side, the 17-pounder equipped Shermans became arguably the most effective Allied tanks of the Second World War and were easily capable of knocking out any German tanks they encountered following the Normandy landings. An aircraft that is undoubtedly one of the most significant in the history of aviation, the Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR.1 was developed from the Hawker P.1127 experimental aircraft produced to test the possibilities of V/STOL vectored thrust flight. These aircraft would successfully master the transition from hovering to forward flight and back to the hover, despite several of the development aircraft suffering accidents during testing.  The prospect of a viable V/STOL aircraft proved to be of great interest to both the British and US military, who funded further development of the aircraft.
